Basic Tips for Keeping a Home Freshwater Aquarium

Keeping a home freshwater aquarium may seem daunting, but if you know a few basic things about aquarium keeping, it should not be hard at all; in fact it will be fun. There are a few things you need to know that can make your job a lot easier, especially if you understand why they are important. Let’s have a look at some of them here:

1. Lighting

This is largely determined by the kind of fish you want to keep, but whatever kind of aquarium you have you will need some kind of light. The fish need it, and if you have live plants, they need it too. And of course you need it so that you can be able to see your fish! Light intensity is an important factor. Choose a high color temperature ranging between 5000 to 70000 Kelvin for the best color in your tank. Color Rendering Index is also essential. The sun gives a CRI of 100, so choose artificial lighting that is close to this.

2. Filters

A filtration system for your home freshwater aquarium in your tank is key – without it, your home freshwater aquarium will not be able to dispose of the waste from fish and plants. A filter acts like a sponge. It sucks in dirty water and retains the particulate matter (dirt) and lets the clean water pass through. Different kinds of fish will produce different amounts of waste and you will need to check on the specific filters you need. Filter placement is also important. Some filters are designed with the inlet to take in dirty water and the outlet release clean water very near each other which does not make a lot of sense. There are under-gravel filters which are generally considered to be on the lower scale. They encourage gas bubbles to be trapped in the substrate which hold poisonous gases. Biological filters are good – they clean your water and at the same time, release components that make the environment in the tank even richer. A good filter should be able to combine all 3 steps of filtration – the physical, the biological and the chemical.

3. Home freshwater aquarium plants

Some people will opt to go for plastic plants, but if you can, by all means go for live ones. They do not just make your tank look prettier – they will encourage a more natural environment in your tank. Plants take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Fish on the other hand take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide. It’s a rich symbiotic existence. Plants may also absorb other impurities that are released by the fish as nutrients and therefore help in keeping your water cleaner. If you notice that they are getting too tall and blocking the light, simply trim them. Some plants need to be trimmed in a special way so find out before you buy. You may also want to avoid those that grow too fast as this means extra work for you.

4. Types of fish that you keep

There are different types of fish that you can keep in your home freshwater aquarium and the temptation may be to go for the most colourful and brilliant looking fish that you can get. You need to consider a few things though. First is the fish mix: some fish prey on others so no matter how good they look, they’ll soon be the only ones left in the tank. You also need to think about how big they grow when they reach maturity. They may grow so big that they will not fit in the tank any more. Bigger fish will also tend to eat more and deprive the smaller ones. Think of how many you want to keep – too many and your water will turn dirty too quickly.

A home freshwater aquarium is definitely one way to brighten your home and also enjoy a hustle free hobby. Understanding a few basics like these ones listed here, helps you know how to manage things better.
