The Pros and Cons of Using Second-Hand Pushchairs
With the economy still in such a precarious position, it’s no wonder a lot of people are trying to save a few pounds here and there. Expenses are trimmed, budgets are tightened – there’s simply no way a “splurge” can be justified these days. But saving money has to look beyond the few pennies we can cut back now and consider the long-term effects of a particular expense.
It’s not that we shouldn’t be thrifty in these trying times. In fact, it’s best not to over-indulge given the economic downturn. One way to prevent unnecessary spending is to take an inventory of your own closets, cabinets, dressers, etc. Take note of what you already have and live within your means without additional spending. Times like these, relatives and thrift stores can be rather helpful. Why buy new when you can go for hand-me-downs or second-hand items?
As mentioned earlier, however, being thrifty doesn’t mean wanting to avoid every expense ever. Being too focused on not spending can actually cause you more in the long run. For example, buying children’s items can be quite a burden on the wallet. Things like clothes and shoes that are easily outgrown – there’s no need to buy these if you have relatives who would like to hand them down to your child. As long as the clothes and shoes are clean and in good condition, there’s no reason to buy new at all!
But what about really big ticket items like pushchairs? Using strollers benefit not only the child, but the parent as well. It’s a great way to travel with your child, safely and comfortably. Unfortunately, most pushchairs are also quite expensive, especially if you go for models that offer a lot of additional features.
There are several pros and cons when it comes to purchasing second-hand pushchairs. First, the pros. Your child can easily outgrow a pushchair. Just imagine – every time your child has a growth spurt, you might need to purchase a new stroller. Prams, buggies, pushchairs – each one represents a different period in your child’s development. You’ll be purchasing and re-purchasing every time your child grows. It would be rather wasteful to pay full price for something you won’t be using for a long time. Also, most pushchairs are barely used. Since children outgrown them easily, a lot of these strollers are barely used and can easily be handed down.
However, you should also know that a pushchair is a means of travelling safely with your child. Some second-hand pushchairs may be defective, or may lack the safety features necessary to protect your children. If you’re getting a unit from a relative or someone you trust, well and good. If it’s a thrift store, though, you may want to check if the pushchair you’re getting is still useful and safe for your child’s use. Take note also that a lot of pushchairs these days can actually last you much longer, in the sense that they can convert from prams to pushchairs and even attach car seats. This makes a brand new version a better investment in the long run. You may also need to consider the number of children you’ll be having. If you’re having more than one child, buying a pushchair means you can still reuse it for all your other children in the future.
So the bottom line here is though we want to save every penny, looking forward and seeing savings in the long-run could actually be more beneficial.
