What does it mean to “lock the hubs” of one’s four-wheel drive?
I know nothing about cars except how to operate a crummy old automatic two wheel drive in a straight line, around bends, curves and parking spaces. I just saw a video where someone “locks the hubs” of their 4WD before taking off. Without going in to any complicated detail about its mechanics and functions, can somebody explain to me what this means?
On a four wheel drive car you usually have selections of which wheels are been driven. Assuming it’s manual when you select 4×4 locked, it means that all four wheels are turning at the same speed of rotation so you have maximum grip / drive. Works on mud, ice snow, but if you still have 4×4 locked selected and you are on a dry clean road you will feel shuddering in the steering / car as the wheels are all turning at the same speed, where as when you are going round corners the inside wheel could be slower than the off side wheels or vice versa. You would feel this as a shuddering effect.This would in time strip tyres faster than normal and is a function you would only use on snow, ice or mud.
We have one, brill this winter, went any where without any difficulty bit heavier on petrol though.
