Everything You Need To Know About Diatomaceous Earth

Our planet is inhabited by millions of tiny organisms known as diatoms. They have a huge impact on society even though these organisms are incredibly small in stature. When these organisms die, a fossil consisting of a pair of symmetrical shells remains. Diatomaceous earth is formed when millions of these fossils are present. The original discoverer, back in around 1837, thought he had discovered limestone which could have been used as fertilizer, but he was wrong, and he couldn’t imagine a use for the substance he had found.

Individuals soon found uses for the substances since it was available in such large amounts. One of these uses was to make a safer version of dynamite.  It was also noticed to have excellent filtering capabilities. However, the substance still wasn’t commonly used for filtration purposes yet.

Diatomaceous earth makes an excellent filtering medium thanks to the fact that it is very porous. When you need to filter out tiny particles which will either clog or flow through ordinary filter paper, DE can do the job. It has been widely used in chemical filtration as well as in the process of decontaminating water. The water in fish tanks and swimming pools can be cleaned with this substance. It can also be used to filter syrup, honey, wine, and beer since it doesn’t alter them at all. Other people have found ways to make use of it in the manufacture of paper, soaps and detergents, paints, and ceramics.

Another point worth mentioning when discussing the value of diatomaceous earth filtration is the fact that this material is available in abundance as a naturally-occurring element in nature. The western United States has plenty of it.  Other places like Denmark and the Sahara Desert have plenty to offer too. You won’t cause any damage to the earth when you use diatomaceous earth as a filtering medium.
