When a soot coated stainless spoon black outside water, it looks as shiny before soot coating. Why/?
Hold a stainless spoon on a burnng candle a little above the flame and it becomes black. Dip it in a beaker of water and then see it turning into sparkling stainless steel colour. Removeit agian from water. It become black with soot. Why?
The soot supports surface tension of the water as a film – which gives the reflective silvery finish – you get the reflection from the film interface, much as you would with a mirrror.
Why the carbon isn’t ‘wetted’ by the water is to do with the molecular make up which is rather less awe inspiring than the rather magical efffect you describe.
