Construction Essentials: Acquiring Top Inlet Protection
Before construction projects can begin, developers are required to adhere to several legal requirements designed to protect inlets and water sources. In fact, construction sites larger than one acre must obtain a construction storm water permit – or a NPDES. The National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Stormwater Program is a government-sanctioned program which manages storm water discharges from three possible sources: MS4s (or municipal separate storm sewer systems – city storm sewers), industrial activities, and construction sites. Developers who fail to obtain this permit before breaking ground and comply with such regulations during construction can result in steep fines, enforced by the Environmental Protection Agency.
In order to obtain the NPDES permit, developers much complete a “storm water pollution prevention plan” (SWPPP), which details pollution sources found at the construction site and how they intend to keep those contaminants out of local waterways and water sources. This is to ensure debris, sediment, toxins, and other harmful components from the site do not get into lakes, rivers, streams, etc. and wreak havoc on the environment and surrounding wildlife.
One way construction developers do this is through the use of storm inlet protection products and solutions; there are a myriad of companies that specialize in inlet protection and offer a variety of products that enable compliance with legal requirements. For example, a special type of permeable fabric can be placed over curb inlets that don’t have storm grates.
When it rains, all that water filters through the inlet while the fabric blocks the harmful debris and sediment from entering the water source. Some companies also offer what are known as inlet protection devices (or IPD’s), which essentially do the same thing: they collect debris and sediment while water passes through into the inlet. Most IPD’s are placed over the inlet for the duration of the construction project.
However, be aware that not all inlet protection products are made equal. To ensure the solutions you choose are durable, high quality, and complaint with the law, consult only with reputable, well-established companies experienced in storm inlet protection and sediment control. Doing so can protect developers and their projects and potentially save them thousands of dollars in fines.
