About Rome
Rome has a history that spans over 2500 years, starting its history as a small Italian village and becoming the capital of today’s Italy. Today Rome is known as a major tourist destination because of its architectural heirlooms and glorious monumentality. Rome is a contemporary metropolis that reflects all the periods of its long history, from Ancient times, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. In Rome you will be surrounded by its history, with each and every church and building telling you its story from the past.
Rome’s weather
Rome has a typical Mediterranean climate.
Winter – December to February
Rome’s winters start in December until February and tend to be moderate with average temperatures of around 10°C to 15°C. In Rome the two wettest months are usually November and December.
Spring – March to June and Autumn – September to November
If you prefer mild temperatures and clear blue skies you should visit Rome during Spring or early Autumn (September and October).
Summer – June to September
The summer months are from June to September, with high humidity from July to August. With temperatures rising to around 37°C in the summer, Rome’s summer is known to be hot and dry.
The best time of the year to visit Rome
In the middle of May the Italians have a week called the “La settimana dei beni culturali”. For these 7 to 10 days they make their landmarks accessible to everyone by not charging any admittance to all publicly owned historical and archaeological sites, museums and landmarks (including the Colosseum, Quirinale palace and gardens and all of the ancient Forum).
You might prefer a less overcrowded vacation in Rome and then you should visit some time in August. Shop-owners close down their shops and other amenities during August for two weeks, going on vacation themselves. You’ll find a sign on many of the establishments with the words: “Chiuso per ferie”, meaning “Closed for holidays”.
Money Matters in Rome
The Euro
Rome finds itself in the euro zone and the euro notes come in denominations of €500, €200, €100, €50, €20, €10 and €5 with euro coins in denominations of €2 and €1, and 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 cents.
Changing money
Money can be exchanged at banks, post offices, an exchange office (cambio) or at exchange booths at some of the airports or in the center of the city.
Cash withdrawals
A ‘bancomat” is an ATM and they are widely available in Rome. The daily limit for cash withdrawals are €250 and most ATMs will accept Visa, MasterCard, Cirrus and Maestro cards.
Credit cards
Most of the hotels, restaurants and shops in Rome will accept credit cards although some of the smaller guesthouses and pizzerias will only accept cash. If you have a Visa, MasterCard, Eurocard, Eurocheques or Cirrus you will be fine because they are widely accepted all over Rome.
Travelers cheques
American Express, Travelex and Visa cheques are the easiest to cash if it is in US dollars, British pounds or euros although the banks charge you hefty commissions.{Banks charge hefty commissions for cashing travelers cheques, even if it is in US Dollars or British pounds but they accept American Express, Travelex and Visa cheques.} You need to take your passport as identification when cashing a travelers cheque.
Taxes, Refunds and Receipts
IVA in Rome is what is known as their value-added tax and is the 20% they add to almost anything you purchase.When leaving the country you can claim a refund of the tax you paid on any purchase of more than €155. Look for retail outlets with “Tax Free for Tourists”-signs when purchasing expensive goods to be able to apply for your refund.
You are legally required to get a receipt for any purchase you make by the Italian tax law. You will get a €155 fine if an officer ask you for your receipt as you leave a shop and you are unable to show it.
Costs in Rome
Accommodation and meals
One of your biggest outlays in Rome will probably be your accommodation, costing you between €80 and €300 for a double room in a 3-star hotel excluding full meals. Hotels in the historic center (centro storico) will be more expensive than those near Stazione Termini.
Admission to museums and public transport
Admission to museums vary between €8 and €13 (and some are free). You will only have to pay around €4 for a day pass for public transport.

You will easily find a direct flight to one the local airports and from there you will find a comprehensive public transport system. Local transport include the following:
Taxis
Your safest option will be licensed taxis. These taxis are white or yellow with the letters SPQR on the front door. You should phone and book a taxi or wait at a taxi rank because hailing a passing taxi will not work in Rome.The better option would be to go for the metered fare and not an arranged fare but note that the meter is switched on when they receive the call and you pay from wherever the driver receives the call.
Buses & Trams
Buses run from 5:30am until midnight on certain routes. Night buses, marked with a N after the number, departure every 30 minutes and night bus stops have a blue owl symbol on them.
Motorcycles & Scooters
The average prices for rentals per day are around €95 for a 500cc motorcycle and €50 for a 125cc scooter.
Bicycles
The traffic in the center of the city is terrible and there are many steep hills, but you will find many cycle paths especially designed for cycling. In the week after 9pm or on Sundays you will be able to pedal around town when the city center is closed to traffic. Bicycles can be hired at a variety of places and will cost you about €3 per hour and €10 per day.
Events & Festivals
The Estate Romana Festival (Roman Summer Festival)
The festival offers a variety of musical events, films, sports, theaters and childrens entertainment. It is usually held from late June to early September.
The Whight Night (Notte Bianca).
The Whight Night is usually held from early to mid-September and offers various events with plus shops, restaurants and museums staying open while the Roman Notte Bianca stages music, dance and theater events.
Languages
Most of Rome’s population speaks Italian or a dialectal form of Italian slang called Romanesco. Romanesco is harder to follow than correct Italian but most of the people will speak correct Italian when they know they are dealing with foreigners. English is also widely spoken in Rome, especially by people who work in the tourism business.
Dining and Wining in Rome
Rome is known for its good food but many of the good restaurants are not that easy to find. You will find the best places to eat by asking the Italians what they recommend and by looking for places where they eat. An average lunch or dinner with a coffee will cost you between €15-20. A pizza will also be around €20 at a good pizzeria. Lighter meals can be bought at local supermarkets as they offer fresh food at affordable prices.

Pizzas
Pizzas is known to be an Italian specialty but be aware of the pizzas sold at the tourist areas because you will be charged almost double the price and you will be paying a lot of money for a frozen reheated pizza. Rather spend your money at a real Pizzeria in Rome that serve real Italian Pizzas and offer a great atmosphere as well. These pizzerias mostly serve pizza only in the evening, but it is worth the waiting.
Italian Ice Cream
In Rome you will find many ice cream / gelato shops. Look for a sign with a big “G” that indicates that they only serve good quality ice cream. For homemade ice cream you look for a sign saying: “Produzione Propria”, their own production says: “Nostra Produzione” and production by craftsmen will say: “Produzione Artigianale”.
Coffee
There are many good Italian cafes all over Rome, serving some of the best coffees, from Espresso, Cappuccino to Americano (almost like filter coffee).
Wines
Some very good regional wines that are drinkable and affordable, are served at most trattorie. You can expect to pay around €4 or €5 per bottle, but be aware of the places in the tourist area, they will overcharge you.
