The Attractive Hobby of Water Gardening
There are a lot of new things happening in the area of gardening, and water gardening is one of those things that’s really gaining popularity.Water gardening can be in the form of waterfalls, ponds, fountains, all of which can be enhanced by rock work combinations and lighting, plants, and fish. Water gardening doesn’t have to be a pond or natural water source either, it can consist of just a plastic tub, basically anything that can hold water.
Probably one of the most critical things that you want to think about is where you place your water garden. Since both your fish and your plants are going to need a lot of sunlight, you need to think of putting it in a place that has direct light for a good amount of the day. Try to keep it away from trees and bushes. Doing this will help to prevent your water feature getting a bunch of leaves and debris in it.
Another thing that you want to think about is the size of water feature that you want. This will depend on how much money you are willing to spend because water gardening can get expensive if you opt for a large garden full of plants, rocks, fish, and lights. Also consider the size of our property, and the amount of time you want to spend with maintaining your water garden.
You need to remember that you only want your aquatic plants to take up around 50% of your water so take this into consideration when choosing them. Plants come in many different varieties including submerged varieties, free floating, and marginal. The decision on which of these different plan types you choose from is just a personal choice. Many people like plants because they smell good, or because they provide a good source of oxygen for the pool, or just because they are beautiful. Fish as well add a lot more to a water feature than just looks. Fish help keep debris at a minimum and help in controlling larva and other insects.
One of the main difficulties in water gardening is keeping water clear of algae. Algae problems are usually caused from too many nutrients in the water from feeding fish too often or from over fertilizing plants. Learning proper pond care and maintenance can help to maintain and control algae problems.
All garden ponds and water features regardless of size will need maintenance throughout the year. With proper planning you can ensure a healthy balance between living and decorative features of a water garden that can almost care for itself with simple maintenance inputs from you.
You can get rid of algae by reducing on the nutrients that cause the algae by cutting back on feeding and fertilizing, planting more plants, installing a filter system, or replacing existing water with fresh water. One of the chemicals that you could use to help control the problem is a copper compound, but you need to be careful as overuse can kill both your plants and your fish. Obviously this isn’t something that is desirable.
Regular gardening and water gardening are obviously two completely different things, but one really doesn’t take any more time than the other. You may be the type person who couldn’t grow a flower if you tried but would be excellent at water gardening. Water gardening probably isn’t for everybody, but if you are looking for something to do in your spare time which will enhance the beauty of your yard, then you might want to give it a try.
