Tips For Baking A Perfect Cake
If you have never made a cake from scratch, you are far from alone. In fact it is most unusual to find someone with the time and the desire to make a homemade cake. It is just so much easier to buy one ready made, and so much quicker too. But it really is worthwhile to do it yourself if you are so inclined, and your friends who share it will be so grateful. Read on for some tips to make it easier.
You can help insure your success by choosing a recipe appropriate for your ability. If you try something too complicated, the results may be less than satisfactory. Your cookbooks may be a good place to start, but they do not have the advantage of online recipe collections where you can read ratings and see the comments of other bakers.
Next you will want to read the recipe through a few times to make sure you have all the ingredients and supplies you will need. This means not only what goes into the cake, but all the other equipment as well. You do not want to have the batter prepared and ready for the oven, only to find that you need round cake pans when you have nothing but square ones.
With all your ingredients and supplies checked off, consult the recipe again to make sure you know what temperatures the various components should be. It is not unusual for some of them to be allowed to warm up. This is typical of eggs and egg whites when they are called for. Other things may require chilling first.
Before you start to actually put together the cake batter, you may need to prepare some of the ingredients further. For example, the recipe may require you to grate citrus peel or shred coconut. You do not want to have to break off beating the batter to handle this preparation, and the delay could ruin your cake. Each cake pan should also be made ready for use, greased and floured if need be.
Pat yourself on the back once the cake is baking, but then get busy undoing any messes made along the way. Clean the counters, wash mixing bowls, make use of the dishwasher if needed. If there are dry ingredients scattered anywhere, one of those wonderful handheld vacuums will make quick work of removing it. A beautiful cake deserves a beautiful setting.
