Get The Most Space Out Of Your Dorm Room
College is an exciting time. It is the milestone between being under supervision and becoming an adult. This is a period of change. One major adjustment incoming college students will have to make is their living space.
Dorm rooms can be very tiny and they are often shared by two people. In order to get the most of this space, you have to sharpen your organizational skills. Some universities offer floor plans to the space. This can help give you an idea on what kind of furniture to prepare.
On the other hand, many schools will not allow you to bring your own furniture. So before you go out and buy a full loft bed, find out what the school policy is on furniture. Once you know what is allowed by school policy, you’ll know how to proceed.
Once you get the clear signal from the school, you may consider buying a loft bed. This is a space saving bed that doubles as a workstation as well. If you’re not allowed to bring your own furniture, ask if the beds the school provides are stackable. If so, ask your roommate to create a bunk bed with you. This will save plenty of space in the room.
Of course, a tiny dorm room is no place for a dining room set. However, you can use crates that double as a storage bin and coffee table. The theme in trying to get organized in a dorm room or any type of small space is to find furniture that serves a double purpose.
Stackable, plastic crates can be used to transport your stuff between home and school during breaks. They can also serve as storage spots for your stuff during school. You can easily store them under the bed as well. Crates and baskets that fit under your bed are a great way to maximize your dorm room space.
Use horizontal shelves as opposed to vertical shelves. Horizontal shelves can help fill up empty wall space. They can also home books and other knick-knacks you may want to keep around you. Also, minimize the clutter in your dorm room and only bring clothes that you will wear. Clothes that are seasonally appropriate as well will save space. You can adjust your clothes in between your visits home.
Keep your dorm room clean and tidy. This will instantly give it a bigger feel. If you are cluttered and unorganized, it will only make your space seem smaller than it is!
