Forget Green at Home: Green at Work’s Where Its At
“Cutting your carbon footprint” has become a household phrase in the past year, with a flood of news stories, advertising campaigns and buzz about how you can do your bit at home to prevent global warming. Suddenly we’re all worrying about our carbon footprints, insulating our lofts at the weekend and buying eco-friendly lightbulbs.The reality, however, is that our individual impact on the environment is just a drop in the ocean.The truth is that the largest part of the global enviornmental burden comes from businesses and organisations. And just like any economy of scale, in larger organisations even a small change can have a huge impact.
Yes, I hear you say. But it’s not my problem to fix. That’s the job of my boss, and my boss’s boss – nothing to do with me. Not true. If you have a workplace, you can make big changes to your employer’s carbon footprint.What’s more, green initiatives at work can be hugely more effective than the things you might do in the home.
Here are some pointers, small and large, on achieving a greener workplace:
- Recycle office waste. There’s a huge amount of potentially recyclable material that businesses dispose of every day – far more than your home output could ever be. Why not try bringing in recycle containers in accessible locations. Its simpler than you think, as there are countless government and charity programs to do this for you for free.
- Cut down on driving. Set up a car pooling scheme to cut down on exhaust emissions. Better still, do your body and the world a favour by cycling or walking to and from work.
- Change to energy saving bulbs. Switching a few bulbs in the house conserves only a small amount of energy. But think of how much more energy is used in lighting up your office and you begin to see how powerful a simple thing like switching to energy saving bulbs could be.
- Green Computers. No business today is without a large number of computers and IT, and the energy usage of these is massive. Simply hitting the power button on your computer screen is a great start. The next step is to get onto the IT department where you work and tell them to review their “green baseline”. Get them to perform some proper asset tracking on all office IT equipment, using professional asset management software, a business can dramatically reduce its carbon footprint and help meet increasingly stringent government environmental requirements.
- Campaigning. Go to the next level. Get your work buddies involved in some green campaign and you’ll really see change happening.Us little people, by pressuring the company directors and managers to really take their green obligations seriously, can make great waves. A lot of the time going green also saves the company some green, as the IBM ad shows brilliantly. For example, companies involved in transporting goods and supplies often generate millions of tons of CO2. Pushing them to properly review their transport and logistics management and make the smallest of improvements can save them big money and dramatically reduce their carbon footprint in the process.
