Reverse Osmosis Water Filters Will Keep Your Water Pure

If you want to enjoy the benefits of drinking pure water then you have to consider one of the reverse osmosis water filters for your home. Reverse osmosis water filters are also called hyper filtration filters and this is the finest water filtration technique practiced today. This technology is used by most of the premium bottled water companies for purification. It is very effective because it eliminates more kinds of contaminants than other methods. Even individual ions can be easily removed. The reverse osmosis membrane pores measure up to 0.0005 micron. Viruses are about 0.2-0.4 microns and bacteria are about 0.2-1 micron in size.

Two types of membranes that are used for reverse osmosis water filters are Cellulose Triacetate (CTA) and Thin Film Composite (TFC). TFC membranes are better than CTA because they have higher rejection rates. However, the quality of these membranes are easily affected by the chlorine in the water. So you have to look for filters that have quality activated carbon pre-filters. An RO system usually has many activated carbon pre-filters, membrane, storage tank and a faucet to provide the filtered water to the countertop. The systems using reverse osmosis vary according to the quality of the membrane, storage and output capacity.

Reverse osmosis water filters are one of the best choices for home water purification needs. It is recommended for people who are using the pre-treated municipal water system. These filters have the ability to remove most of the inorganic chemicals like metals, salts, and minerals. They can also remove most of the microorganisms like giardia and cryptosporidium. Inorganic contaminants are also removed easily. The best thing about these filters is that they can successfully treat a wide range of dissolved minerals and metals.

They are also successful in removing asbestos contamination and treating chemicals that are responsible for producing odor and changes in the taste and color of water. There are various advantages and disadvantages of using these water filters. The advantages include high rejection of a wide variety of contaminants and they are very cost effective for long term use.

The disadvantages are that they require carbon pre-filters and sediment for preventing membrane fouling. The process works against the standard osmotic pressure. It is very slow and produces only about 15 gallons of pure water per day. It may also require about 3-10 gallons of water to produce 1 gallon of pure water.

In order to reduce the fouling and maintain the system for optimum performance, you have to maintain the water filters properly by replacing the carbon or other pre-filters used. Replace them every 2-3 years. This system is good for homeowners who use well water too. However, it is not a foolproof method for getting your water purified from all kinds of micro-organisms. Get the water tested and use a combination of reverse osmosis and ultraviolet for better results.
