Can these round filters be other brands, or do they have to be Cokin?
For example, I have a lens with 52mm diameter. Can I use a 52mm round filter along with the Cokin system, or do I have to get a larger size round filter?

You can put any round filter on the lens and the Cokin filter attached to that filter. The Cokin round system filters only fit in the Cokin holder.
