How to roller blade up and down hills?
I’m having such a difficult time with this because I use to live in a flat are until I moved here where we only have hills. I don’t even know how to stop in my roller skates. Cany anyone help me?
Stopping
I hope that you never listened to the flat landers that told you to throw out your heel brake. It is the most effective stopping and speed control method you have available and with the least skill needed. The other methods all use friction of the wheels against the ground which will add a lot of wear to them.
The trick to using the heel brake is scissoring your feet so that the brake foot is ahead of the gliding foot and getting low. The farther forward your brake foot is, the more of your weight you can use for stopping you.
You may feel silly practicing stops but it really helps. When you have an excuse to stop, try to see how extremely you can do it.
The T stop is ok for controlling your speed in less intense situations or mild hills. It is good to practice it as a secondary method in your skating tools.
Climbing hills
Maintain your speed reasonably. Start fast so that you have some speed you can loose on the way up. Once you get too slow, you will not be able to keep your stride going and will effectively be walking up the hill.
If you have a good stride, deep bends of the knees, legs stretching out almost sideways, pushing through the heel instead of the ball of the foot, all you need to do is angle your skates out a little more to effectively shift to a lower gear for climbing.
You need the knee bend so that your legs push out through a longer stoke on each stride. A short stand up stride will work on flat areas but the low, wide, stride will move you faster on those areas also.
