What voltage and current do you get from a Nicad battery?
I am trying to select a motor for use in a small handheld blender… I have been told to use nicad rechargeable batteries. What voltage and current do i get from them? Whether it be 1, 2 or 4… etc of them? thanks!
Each NiCad cell will have a voltage of about 1.25V. NiMH (nickel metal hydride) cells will be just a bit higher — about 1.3V.
The current drawn is determined by the load — your motor in this case.
How LONG you can supply that current is determined by the battery. A typical NiMH AA cell is about 2 Ampere-hours, or 2,000 milliampere-hours. This means that that battery can deliver 0.2 A for about 10 hours.
Batteries have a little bit less capacity with a heavy load, so it won’t deliver 2Amps for 1 hour — maybe 2A for 45 minutes or so.
If you need more voltage, put the batteries in series.
If you need more current, then get a bigger battery. Putting the batteries in parallel will theoretically work, but there are all sorts of problems in matching cells to make them share the load properly and to get them to charge, so paralleling is generally a bad idea.
