Why are the stitches too loose when using the zipper foot on my sewing machine?
I am trying to use the zipper foot to sew in popper tape. The tape is a polyester/nylon type fabric and the stitches are very loose and just pull straight through. The zipper foot works fine on a piece of test fabric but seems to hate the popper tape fabric. Any ideas how I can overcome this problem please. This is urgent as I need to adapt clothing for a little boy who has to wear a large metal frame on his leg following an operation.

Your suggestion has helped a lot. The stitches are still a bit loose but nowhere near as bad as before.
I have altered pressure back to 4. Is there anything else I could do to improve the tension do you think?
It sounds more like a threading issue – the top thread is not seated into the tension.
Or, the presser foot was not completly down when sewing and this opened the upper tension.
Raise the presser foot and pull out about 6″ of thread and try again, making sure the presser foot is down and nothing is holding it up and away from the zipper tape.
Hope this will resolve the issue.
