Why are my heat pump/AC lines icing up?
When my AC is running for an extended period, the large, insulated line ices over, accumulating as much as an inch of ice. In addition, parts inside the heat pump ice over, but not the external coils. Hardly any air blows in the house, and the fan on the heat pump outside blows cold air. In addition, the heat pump just continues to run, turning it into a very expensive outdoor ice maker.
The most common reason why a Heat pump will freeze up. Lack of airflow. This is usually caused by a dirty air filter. Change it, If it still freezes up then the culprit could be a clogged or dirty indoor coil. (were the copper lines comes into the indoor furnace) If it is dirty then you will need to clean it. Probably will need a pro to clean it right. If it is NOT dirty and the problem still happens then the other issue would be low on refrigerant. Once again you will need a PRO to come in and check it. Low freon levels usually mean a leak somewhere in the system. If you do find the indoor coil is dirty this usually means the filters are NOT being changed often enough. Remember if your filter is ONE inch thick , it needs changed EVERY month. A Two inch filter every 2 to 3 months. A four inch thick filter every 6 months. I hope this helps.
