Canadian History Overview

The wonderful land of Canada is situated in North America. Canada can be captured in one line as Amari Usque Ad Mare which means from sea to sea denoting the country’s wide spread from the Atlantic to Pacific to Arctic Ocean. The longest border of the world divides the United States of America and Canada which stands at the second position area-wise amongst all the countries of the world. Like its vast area, Canada has a very large and old history.

History can be tracked back to Pre-Columbian era of Paleo-Indians and Archaic periods. Around 50,000 to 170,000 years ago, Wisconsin glaciations lowered the sea levels giving way to the land bridge of Berin and allowing people to travel across it, as revealed by historic studies of North America and Aboriginal genetic state. Then after approximately 1000 years later, the glaciers started melting and allowed people to enter the south and east of Canada. It took 600 decades more or in other words 1000 decades from today that the North American climate soothe down to make way for land which still had sheets of glacial ice. Much of the population thrived on wild hunting while some small groups relied on local resources

The post-Archaic period or woodland culture period of Canadian history stayed from the 2000BCE to 1000CE. People living on the cultures alongside Lake Ontario were connected through the Aboriginal culture of Hopewell. For a number of years, different Indian tribes lived and flourished in the lands of Canada. It is said in the studies that the Paleo-Eskimos whose culture dates back to 500 CE were swapped by the ancestors of the modern Inuit around 1500 CE.

In 1000AD, the Vikings from the European side thronged Canadian colonies for a brief period. This colonization was failed and the second attempt was made by Italian seafarer Giovanni Cobato in 1497. Subsequently, different European delegations and individuals explored the area and in 1610, English established thirteen colonies in the south. Then came the European period of Canadian exploration signified by treaties, colonies, wars etc. After the war between Britain and USA in 1812, in which Canada was the main front, immigrants from Britain and Ireland came flowing in Canada. After a number of constitutional arrangements, among which The Act of Union 1840 that amalgamated the Canada into the united Province of Canada was a major one, the constitution Act 1867 officially proclaimed the Canadian Federation.

When the British declared war, Canada became a part of WWI. The Battle of Vimy Ridge among other battles saw significant participation from the Canadian side. Canada joined League of Nations in 1919 autonomously. The independence of Canada came in 1931 signified by the erection of the Statue of Westminster. The WWII saw Canada fighting against Germany immediately after Britain.

A new Canadian identity materialized by the policies of succeeding liberal governments, marked by the adaptation of existing Maple Leaf Flag in 1965.
