After WWII, why did the US want Japan to be an open country, when Commodore Perry went to Japan? Please no links to websites, just an explanation!
His mission was to establish a trade treaty with Japan, so that American trade with Japan would no longer be controlled by the Dutch. (Japan at the time allowed foreign trade only through the Dutch and Chinese.) Several American ship masters, commercial and military, had tried to open trade with Japan before Perry did.
It happened in the 1850s, by the way, almost a century before World War II.
