Soon the innovations in credit card usage will rapidly become the norm.This new system seems to be the next move in credit card history.As well, this could well be a moment in history as monumental as moving from the mechanical card machines to the electronic reader system.
According to MasterCard, statistics show that the general public’s preferred method of payment is the credit card.Eighty percent of the poll indicated that cash payments were far more inconvenient than debit cards.Almost 65% of people felt more secure using debit than cash.
It has long been preferred by the government, taxman and credit card companies that society move towards payments being made by plastic vs. cash.It now appears that this is also the preferred method by the general public.
Already, there are financial institutions testing the waters in this area.There are retailers who now accept purchases of less than ?10
The old cash, credit and debit transactions could be replaced by this next generation of debit and credit cards.A three in one card system is offered by Barclaycard, it is called One Pulse.
But this may lead the future of all credit cards – the use of a traditional credit card, the use of an Oyster card to ride the London Underground and a pay-pass card for purchases less than ?10.
This enables faster payments, no need to give change or process a credit card payment – a great selling feature for retailers.
With a card that is already in use in 20 countries by 17 million, Mastercard is in an extremely strong position in the market.
A traditional credit card can have added features such as a wave and go card and even a prepaid gift card in lieu of traditional cash gifts.
A reusable prepaid card is another version. This requires an upfront deposit to initiate the card and provides customers with an option to top up the card via cash or electronic transfer.
In the same manner that a traditional debit card draws money from a customer’s bank account, there is also debit version available.
The ultimate result is to be able to marry all the payments into one place.
In the end, the customary wallet will give way to a slender card holder with one or two cards that will work in tandem to provide various payment options.
These cards may only be passing trend, soon to be replaced by other options. For example, customers in Japan are already able to use the technology in their mobile phones as a credit card to pay for purchases.
