Suggested Pans For Your Kitchen

If you have the correct pan for what you plan to cook, things will go much smoother. Too often, however, new cooks purchase a set of pans that may contain items they will never use. Conversely, some of the pans you might use several times a week may not be included. You can build a pan collection through purchasing just the pans suitable for the foods you cook and how you cook them.

Many pans for use on the stove top are sold in sets. The most common combination is a two quart, one quart, and four quart pan. These may be a good starter set for novices if matching lids are part of the set. For those who want to make large quantities of chili, soup, or stew, a larger pot or stock pot may be a good investment. An eight quart or even a six quart pot lets you cook two meals at once and freeze one for later.

If you plan to bake layer cakes, you will need at least two round cake pans. Otherwise, you can pass on these altogether. Some people prefer pies, cookies, or sheet cakes because they are simpler to frost and more forgiving to bake. A rectangular pan can be used for this style of cake as well as for casseroles, and its versatility makes it a nice addition to the kitchen.

There are two primary styles of baking or cookie sheets. One has been bent upward on both ends but the sides are open. The other has been turned on all four sides. An enclosed type is needed to bake cookies or foods when the baking surface has to be greased. It is also useful when baking pies, frozen dinners, or rolls.

One often overlooked pan is a shaped style for cakes or even gelatin. If you choose a design that is somewhat generic, you can find many occasions to use it. Some choices include a heart cake pan or one with either a starfish pattern or cartoon character.

When preparing items to be sent out of the house, a disposable aluminum cake pan can be very convenient. They are economical and available in decorative patterns. This saves risking your better pans and can also save clean up time for foods that tend to stick badly.

Cast iron that has been well seasoned cooks quickly and evenly and will last much longer than the coated finishes. A skillet is a nice addition, since it can be used to bake items in the oven or fry them on top of the range. Never place a cast iron pan in the dishwasher and never leave it soaking for very long. Once it has cooled, clean it and then make sure it is completely dry before storing it.

Pans are available from very economical models to expensive professional grade models. If you think you might like to have one of the restaurant quality sets, you might consider purchasing just one pan first. This gives you a chance to evaluate the product before you invest hundreds or even thousands in a set you may not like.
