War Between The States Lives On As Collectors Search Out Confederate Bonds

Have you ever seen a Confederate States of America bond?

The Confederacy urgently requiredfunds for its war effort–indeed, for its very life. Therefore, it resorted to common practice countries have frequently done in modern times: it printed bonds. These bonds constituted guarantees to repay, at a later date and with interest, the loan that a citizen or other “investor” had made in the CSA.

Of course the majority of buyers of Confederate bonds were not repaid, and those certificates that did not end up destroyed or lost were stashed away in drawers and other out-of-the-way places.

Today, though, those bond certificates are prized collector’s items. And, you can turn around and sell Confederate bonds (and other paper collectibles) on eBay for some extra spending money.

Confederate bonds are beautiful when put in a frame and shone on one’s wall. Some of them are practially works of art.  And, due to their historic aspect, they often lead to many a fascinating discussion.

The Confederacy had printed a number of different issues of bonds during the Civil War. For each issue, various “denominations” (referring to the bond’s face value) were printed.  These all had a variety of differing decorations, and often even different pape colors, to distinguish them one from the other.

From a century when even a common bank certificate could be an exercise in extreme ornamentation, Confederate bonds were flush to the metaphorical gills with flourishes, including such scenes as towns and farms, symbolic figures, and, of course, generals and other southern heroes.

If you also acquire and frame one of these bonds and display it, perhaps in a study or office, you will often enjoy looking at it and admiring its arresting appearance. If you’re like me,, you will undoubtedly start trying to feel what it must have been like to be alive in that monumental age and during those particular exciting yet tragic years.

Many Confederate bond issues were actually sold to people in Europe, particularly in Britain, not to the desperately devastated people of the South. My Stonewall Jackson bond was found in a hoard turned up in England in modern times. Such finds turn up every now and then, pushing prices down in the paper collectibles marketplace, however, the situation is usually short lived.  Lately I have read that Stonewall Jacksons are somewhat difficult to come across, so I’m extra glad that I was able to acquire one when I did.

Buying and selling Civil War bonds has become a big activity inisde the the scripophily avocation, which refers to the collecting of old financial instruments (including stock certificates, bank notes and railroad bonds, for instance) for their historical and artistic value.

If you’re a history enthusiast–or if you’re simply on the lookout for a different sort of “art” with which to cover your walls–learning about Confederate war bonds and purchasing a handful select examples could transform itself into a fund and affordable pastime.  Furthermore,It is also an excellent area to look into if you are intrigued by the idea of bringing in money by trading in “paper”–books, magazines, antique prints and so forth.
