Is raw fish from a commercial grocery store safe to eat?
I love the taste of raw tuna. Whether its plain, inside a roll of sushi, etc. What I would like to know is this: Is the frozen, store or “big” brand, say farm raised tuna safe to eat raw. I’m not talking about the fish fillets you see on the blue trays wrapped in plastic but the sealed frozen “steaks” found in the prepackaged bags. I have heard there are specific guidelines followed for the packaging of farm raised products, but i’m looking for some more experienced/knowledgeable advice. Thank you in advance!
Another detail. I live in landlocked Knoxville, TN. Seafood Suppliers are looking far and few between. The few I have researched look expensive. This is my reasoning behind the question on the prepackaged stuff. Thanks
Probably. Tuna steaks are most often from a yellowfin and are not the Ahi tuna most often served raw. Sushi grade is usually from the big bluefins and is processed and frozen right on the ship, right out of the water. Having said that, any tuna that’s been handled properly should be okay but, as with any raw animal meat, ” Ya pays your money, and ya takes your chances. ” ( best fish advice I can give you is that fish should NOT smell. If it smells at all ‘fishy’ then that’s how it will taste.
