Your Various Options in Outdoor Shutters

Basswood is the ideal material for most wood house shutters.  Not only is it durable and able to withstand severe weather from arctic blasts to equatorial monsoons, but it is also cost effective and looks appealing both inside and outside the house.  Despite the fact that there are several kinds of hardwoods used in shutters, basswood is the number one choice when it comes to wooden shutters. Another alternative is vinyl house shutters.

Interior shutters are normally very straight and have a glossy surface. Unlike different kinds of wood that have heavy graining, basswood has a finer grain, making it an ideal option for outside and inside shutters, particularly for those who are not fond of grainy wood but like to see the wood itself instead of paint. 

Basswood is lightweight enough to be maneuvered and hung easily, yet resilient enough to endure the extreme heat or cold. If you choose to install interior window shutters, they are most likely made of basswood.  There are some other woods used for shutters, and their descriptions follow: 

Oak

Oak is a most graceful wood and is particularly heavy.  Oak also happens to be very grainy. Since oak is so stout, it is not the best choice for interior wooden shutters because it can put a strain on the window jambs.  Many people also are not fond of the grainy appearance of oak, yet oak does not paint very well.  Oak is still a popular choice for house shutters, although not necessarily the best choice. 

Maple

Maple is similar to oak in that it is a golden colored, heavy wood that makes great furnishings but can be difficult to work with when it is used for shutters.  Because maple is so difficult to work with, the jambs need to be drilled before you can install the shutters, a task which requires careful measuring.  Maple interior shutters weigh a bit, like oak, and can rip up the window jambs. Another good choice is vinyl house shutters.

Cedar

Cedar is a solid, strong hardwood that takes stain nicely.  Cedar wood is lightweight which means it is an agreeable material when used for interior wooden shutters. Because it is lighter than oak or maple, cedar shutters will not wear down the window jamb.  Then again, cedar tends to scratch and bruise easier than heavier woods and may require replacement. 

Poplar

Because poplar is striped with minerals and has  a greenish color, it looks more attractive when painted than it does when stained.  For a lot of people, the benefit of wooden shutters is the look of real wood. Most people reject poplar because they would rather not have to paint the wood.  Painting usually needs re-doing much more often than staining. As a consequence, poplar, although less expensive than the other woods, is not often chosen when people are shopping for vinyl house shutters.
