Homemade Lye

Soap is a combination of three ingredients: fat, water and lye. Besides an ingredient in soap recipes, lye has other useful applications in the home. As a cleaning agent, it dissolves oil or protein-based deposits. Many commercial oven cleaning applications use lye. Lye can strip paint finishes, but will leave wood grain raised. Lye dissolves protein and oil — meaning it can degrade soap and hair — making it useful as a drain cleaner.

Chemically, commercial lye and homemade lye are different. Potassium hydroxide is the lye produced from wood ash. The commercially available lye crystals are sodium hydroxide. These two different chemicals cannot be substituted in equal measure. The measurements differ depending on which type of lye you are using in a recipe.

The best ash to use to produce lye (sodium hydroxide) is from hardwoods like oak or maple or fruit trees like apple. Evergreens and pine trees are not suitable woods for ash for this purpose. A hot fire should be used to fully consume the wood, creating papery, white and thin ashes without charcoal chunks.

Collect enough hardwood ash to fill a waterproof non-metal bucket to within 3 or 4 inches of its top edge. The size of this container may vary from five gallons to barrel-sized.

Two containers (not metal) will be required. The first vessel will contain the ash while the second will catch the lye water. At the base of the ash container drill a small hole. The opening should be small enough that it can be sealed with a toothpick, a piece of corking or a wooden rod — something which is not metal.

Layer the bottom of the ash container with river gravel. On top of this, place about 4 inches of packed straw, hay or grass. Fill the remainder of the bucket with wood ash (stop 3 to 4 inches below the top) and tamp it down firmly.

At least five gallons of soft water will be needed, possibly more. Water which is soft has few metals and minerals. You can get soft water using special filters, from lava rock sources like granite or from peat or sandstone. Another alternative is to distill the water you have. Rainwater is a natural source of soft water.

Put your ash container in a secure location away from high traffic areas or places that children or animals might bump, or knock it over. The drainage can be caught in a glass jar, wooden bucket, or an enamel coated pan. Metal containers will react to the lye which could eat holes in the container. Find a position for this catch container that is close enough to the ash bucket to prevent unnecessary splashing during drainage.

Lye can be blinding if it touches the eye. Ingestion of lye can be deadly. It is possible for lye to sear all sorts of surfaces, in particular fats and oils on the skin. Fats and oils combine with lye in such a way that salts are created which cause scars, permanent injury and burns. Note that lye burns may not hurt right away because the burn may be so severe as to have damaged the nerves (pain receptors) in the skin.

Take safety precautions prior to starting. Don’t work in an enclosed area; make sure you have good air exchange. Have contact information for emergency services and poison control on hand. Cover your skin with clothing to protect yourself. Don’t expose your arms and legs by wearing short sleeves or shorts. Protect your eyes with safety glasses and your hands with rubber gloves. Keep vinegar nearby because its application will help neutralize lye burns. Washing with water worsens the effect of burns to the skin caused by lye.

Use a wooden handle or rod to press a small hole into the packed ash. Bring 1 gallon of your soft water to a boil. Cautiously allow the boiling water to flow into the container of ash. The water will react with the ash by bubbling, spitting and splashing. Wait until this simmers down before adding another gallon of soft water. If the level of the ashes sinks, add more ash to the bucket. Continue to add water until the ashes are covered. Place a well-fitting lid on the bucket.

Unstop the drain hole you drilled into the ash container and allow the liquid to runoff into the other container. Draining the ash bucket could take as much as 24 hours.

Repeat this process on days 2 and 3 by pouring the runoff through the ashes again. Your lye will be strengthened by this repetition.

Another option is to leave the container of ash and water sitting. Place the lid on the bucket, leaving it undisturbed for 72 hours. Take care that you choose a location where the bucket won’t be tipped. After this time you should drain the bucket.

The drained liquid is lye water also known as potassium hydroxide. To check the potency, place a newly laid egg that is still in its shell into the liquid. When the proper strength, your lye solution should cause the egg to float with a portion of its shell exposed with a diameter equaling 2 or 2 1/2 cm’s (about the size of a nickel or a quarter). If the egg sinks, the lye water is too weak for soap making. If the egg bobs on top of the surface, the lye is too strong and needs diluting with more rainwater. Be sure to dispose of the egg after use.

Heating weak lye water will strengthen your solution by reducing the water content. Enamel finished pans are safe for this as long as they are never again utilized in cooking foods. Be careful when heating lye as it can be scorched. If a chicken feather starts to melt when held to the hot liquid, you know your solution is the right strength. Remove the lye water from the heat to cool.

Store lye water in jars with plenty of head room to allow for safety in pouring. Close jars firmly and store them in an unlit, cool area where curious children haven’t any access.

Dig a hole in an out of the way area to dispose of the spent ashes. Allow this to cool thoroughly before re-filling the hole.

Should you wish to dry your lye solution into crystals (potash), place it into a lye-safe vessel. Glass jars work well for this use. Leave the container uncovered in the sun until the water evaporates. Follow the same storage precautions with potash crystals as you would the lye water.
